About Me:

I have 30 years of experience teaching KS3 Science, GCSE Science and A‑Level Biology. My vast experience as a classroom teacher and school leader has led to outstanding outcomes. Teaching is my passion, and nothing gives me more joy than seeing young people start to be successful when they have previously been struggling in the classroom.

My teaching style:

My approach is calm, structured and highly personalised. I work successfully with a wide range of learners: from more able pupils to those with SEND. What has always mattered most to me is simple: every child learns differently, and progress happens when lessons are genuinely attuned to the individual.

My experience means I am very skilled at meeting a child where they are in their science learning; whether that is a child who find science difficult or overwhelming, or one who is striving for high grades and who needs that final, refined push to translate their potential into real, measurable achievement. My approach blends clarity and support with challenge to create a steady, confidence‑building rhythm to learning that helps pupils feel capable, motivated and secure.

I also understand how demanding GCSEs and A-Levels can be for parents too! I offer support that brings ease and structure to the preparation and revision process, lightening the load with expert guidance that helps families feel calm, informed and reassured.

What does tuition with me look like?

Initial lesson

The first lesson is a free trial lesson to ensure that your child and I are the right fit. This lesson is a different structure to the following lessons:

Part 1: Discovery call

We discuss your child’s needs, what has worked/not worked in the past, and how together set up the lessons.

Part 2: Trialling potential approaches

The remainder of the hour is to allow your child and I to work together and experiment with potential approaches.

These 2 parts do not need to happen on the same day.

Experience

It is not by chance that I am so effective. My years of experience of working with pupils and parents means that I truly understand the pressure that young people (and their families!) are under, and how this affects their self-esteem and academic outcomes. This experience includes:

Classroom teacher

Over 30 years I have worked with boys and girls of all abilities, from Y7 -13, in a wide variety of schools. This experience has given me many ‘tools in my teaching toolkit’!

Head of Year and Form teacher

As a pastoral leader I was able to work closely with pupils and their families to provide wider support on a pupil’s school journey. A successful journey through school involves a whole family, not just the pupil.

Head of Science faculty

Being a science faculty leader meant  became very familiar with KS3 curriculum and the GCSE and A Level specifications and was able to plan learning schemes that lead to outstanding outcomes for all pupils.

Exam Board marker

I have worked very closely with other markers and principal examiners. The insights this has given me were invaluable and have made a huge impact on how I teach pupils to access the most marks when sitting an exam.

Assistant Headteacher (Inclusion)

I was responsible for the educational progress of pupils who came under the umbrella of SEND, SEMH, EAL, pupils with medical needs. I understand the kind of support both pupils and their families need for a child to make the best possible progress in their education.

Assistant Headteacher (Community outreach, Teaching & Learning)

Both of these posts allowed me to work with Primary School teachers and understand how KS2 science is taught and the grounding it gives pupils as they move into Secondary School. I was also able to guide teachers in other subject areas to produce outstanding outcomes for pupils.

Testimonials

Feedback from past pupils and families

At the  start of y11 I had already accepted that I was going to fail, but after a few sessions with Kay I started to believe I might actually pass! In the end I achieved 2 grades higher than my expected grades and I was beyond happy!

Ellie F. (Y11 pupil)

Despite doing GCSE Science myself, I had no idea where to start to help my son, and after many heated debates at home I knew I needed expert advice. After chatting with Kay it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. My son came out of his science exams saying he thought he had done ok… and he had! His grades improved from grade 2-2 to 5-5 which got him onto his post-16 course. I highly recommend working with Kay.

Mary C. (parent of Y11 pupil)

I got 8-8 in GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics so I just assumed I’d get through A Level Biology using the same revision methods. I started off ok but by the end of Y12 I was 3 grades below my target grade and it was going to affect my UCAS application. Kay worked with me to bring my knowledge up to A Level standards and showed me how to answer questions properly. In the end I got my grades and my first choice of Uni. 😁
